Our Smart Tech Growth Story

It’s been a huge year for Sauce, and with increasing media interest in our continued growth, we thought it was about time we told the Sauce story here on our own website. So here goes...

Sauce was founded by friends Matt Gibson, John Polling and Jim Wardlaw in 2016 when they were among the community of tech specialists using the co-working space at the amazing C4DI tech hub in Hull.

Matt, John and Jim decided to join forces and Sauce was born, with the name a play on the development term source code. Matt Weldon joined as a fourth joint owner shortly afterwards to become our Chief Executive.

In the three years since then we’ve grown ... and grown ... and grown. We’ve gone from three people to a staff of almost 30, and we’ve had to increase our office space at C4DI five times to fit everybody in!

With our growth showing no signs of slowing, we’re now looking forward to moving into a new block that is to be developed next to C4DI.

We’ve worked with major players in industries as diverse as fintech, energy, retail, logistics and healthcare. Our clients include Siemens Gamesa, the NHS and numerous local and national businesses of all shapes and sizes.

We love working with large, traditional businesses as their in-house digital disrupters, enabling them to stay ahead of the technology curve.

A prime example is our work with Ideal Boilers, one of the UK’s leading home heating providers. Based in Hull, Ideal has been manufacturing and supplying boilers for more than 100 years. Now they’re working with us to ensure their products meet the requirements of today’s customers for energy efficient, intelligent and convenient heating systems.

We’ve worked with Ideal to establish them in the smart heating space with a product called Ideal Touch Connect, which is a programmable room thermostat linked to a mobile app or desktop online platform. The system uses IoT technologies that enable devices and everyday objects to communicate and interact, and to be remotely monitored and controlled, over the Internet.

As well as enabling customers to control their heating systems remotely, from anywhere in the world, the intelligent technology collects vast amounts of useful and valuable data in real time, opening up the potential for product maintenance and development.

We’ve added further features, including integration with Amazon’s Alexa digital assistant, so householders can operate their heating systems through voice commands, and geolocation, so heating automatically turns off when the home is empty and switches back on when the first person starts to return.

Here’s our Chief Technology Officer John Polling’s take on our work with Ideal:

“Ideal Boilers is a brilliant example of a traditional business that has really bought into digital. They now have their own in-house IoT team, who are all really switched on and who we work really closely with.

“We create the software, because that’s not their speciality, while they implement the work that we do and link with the builders of the hardware. They are the in-house innovators. They act as a bridge between the worlds of manufacturing and smart software.”

And here’s what Jonathan Wilkinson, Head of IoT at Groupe Atlantic UK (Ideal’s parent company), says about our work together:

“Touch Connect has been a big step for Ideal Boilers as we move into the area of smart, connected technology. We’re looking forward to working with Sauce on further enhancing our connected controls offering as well as developing remote monitoring solutions.

“We plan to utilise the data collected from the boilers to further inform both us and our customers about boiler performance, which has huge potential in the future.”

Of course, none of this would be possible without the support and connections of the brilliant community at C4DI and the facilities we benefit from, not least KCOM’s ultrafast fibre broadband.

We owe so much to being part of the C4DI community. Pictured here, from left, are Director of Development Claire Clark, Lead Developer Aidan Treasure and Developer Danny Wilkinson on the C4DI balcony – the view’s great!

John Connolly, Managing Director of C4DI, says our growth showcases how the tech hub supports start-ups, scale-ups and big companies that want to do business better and smarter through technology. Here’s what he says:

“Sauce is a standout example of the amazing tech talent in Hull and shows the power of bringing together agile digital specialists and traditionally non-tech companies who can benefit hugely from their expertise. It illustrates exactly why C4DI exists.”

So, that’s our story. For more information on Touch Connect and some of our other smart tech projects, check out our online case studies. If you think we can help your business, get in touch at info@wearesauce.io. We look forward to hearing from you.
